Fortnite Battle Royale's competitive community can rest easy knowing that duos are coming back. Earlier today, Epic Games announced the return of the ultra-popular Winter Royale tournament. Fortnite's official website states that:
"Winter Royale is back in 2019 and bigger than ever! Three separate Duos tournaments on three different days in December with $5M prize pools each day. All server regions will take part in platform-specific Duos competition that will be open to any rank of player. The in-game events and rules will be posted soon for additional details."
What to ExpectThe Winter Royale 2019 will feature some of the best duos, who will compete for a $5M USD prize pool each day later this month. We can expect to see names like Kyle "Bugha" Giersdorf, Williams "Zayt" Aubin, Rocco "Saf" Morales and Cody "Clix" Conrad to be in the fray for North America. For Europe, Kyle "Mongraal" Jackson and Benjy "benjyfishy" Fish have already confirmed their partnership moving forward.
This event will bring out the absolute best in competitive Fortnite. Since the World Cup, many fan-favorite duos are no longer together, so we can expect a fresh look at different combinations of competitors. It's also interesting to note that the Winter Royale 2019 will occur across different platforms, which mirrors the current Platform Cash Cup layout.
What is the Winter Royale?Details on the event are a bit sparse, but professional players are salivating at this opportunity. We saw some of the most popular players in Fortnite history breakout during the Winter Royale in 2018. For North America, players like Tom "72Hrs" Mulligan and Davis "Ceice" McClellan are just a few who played well in the first iteration of the Winter Royale. Across the pond, we saw Clement "Skite" Danglot and Dmitri "Mitr0" Van de Vrie take first and third, respectively. However, that was in a solos format, and Epic Games are switching to duos, which will undoubtedly delight several professional players.
Changes from 2018 to 2019Fortnite's competitive landscape has changed significantly since the last Winter Royale tournament. The meta has evolved substantially and some newer names and faces are reigning at the top of the scene. Last time around, Epic Games was only awarding one point per three to four eliminations. Nowadays, the scoring system awards one point per eliminations and placement points typically start at top-25. It will be interesting to see how the Epic Games lay the format for this massive event.
The Winter Royale 2019 will take place from December 20th to December 22nd.
