وذكرت التقارير الإعلامية أن الحادث وقع بسبب تحطم مقود الناقلة «RAVA» المحملة بالنفط والتي يبلغ طولها 249 مترا، لتبدأ بالسير باتجاه ساحل المدينة في منطقة ينيكوي.

ووصلت قاطرات لخفر السواحل التركي على وجه السرعة إلى مكان الحادث، تمكنت من إيقاف الناقلة وهي على بعد 300 متر من الساحل.
