Buying Used Kids Dirt Bikes

Kids dirt bikes can be expensive. So if you're thinking of going the used route, that would entirely be understandable. However, you do need to understand – it can be a gamble finding a good one. You need to know how to properly inspect a used dirt bike before you actually put any money down on it.

The first thing you need to do is, you need to look among all your friends for someone who has real mechanical knowledge. Know what happened to me? When I was about 13, I really, really wanted one of those new kids dirt bikes that I saw my friends ride around. But my parents wouldn't hear of it. So I worked very hard to save some money. When I finally had $2000 after a year, I went to what I thought was a really good used dealership for kids dirt bikes. The bike lasted all of three days before the engine seized. Imagine what it must have felt like to 14-year-old.

It'll likely be just as painful for you when you buy a used dirt bike that doesn't turn out to be a good value. Even new dirt bikes don't often come with warranties, leave alone used ones.

Before you actually put any money down on a dirt bike, do think long and hard about the kind of riding your kid plans to take his bike out on. They make them for different purposes. Bikes can be made especially for long-distance writing, to ride on a trail or in the bush, and they can come with two or four stroke engines.

If you are at all interested in having your kids stay safe, and if your kid is experienced in dirt bike riding, be sure to get something with a small engine. Not only does large engine encourage fast riding, it can quickly become hard work controlling it. Your kid will quickly become tired. And tired riders have to fight harder to stay safe.

There is one exception to that rule though. If your kid plans to ride his new bike on loose desert sand mostly, you'll need a bike that's a very powerful. If your kid weighs 100 pounds, say, a 200 cc engine would be just about right.

Be sure to read up on the different kinds of bikes there are. You will not be able to tell what a bike is built for just by looking at it. Whether they are motorcross bikes that are meant for quick acceleration or trail bikes are meant for trail riding, they more or less look the same to the untrained eye. Make sure that you do your research and only buy that which suits your kid’s needs.
